On the second day of play at the LIEBHERR ITTF European Championships in Warsaw Anna HURSEY of Wales successfully concluded the qualification round and booked her place in the Main Draw of the Women’s Singles Event.
The youngest player in Women’s Events, 15-years old HURSEY overcame the third-highest ranked player on first-day action, Bulgaria’s Maria YOVKOVA (11:3, 11:8, 11:6), before she create another upset by beating Prithika PAVADE of France (7:11, 7:11, 11:8, 6:11, today. It is first defeat for PAVADE on European competitions this year.
“It is incredible. PAVADE is very strong player and she will also play at the Olympics. I had problem with her service game, but in the rallies I was better,” explained Anna.
LIU Yuan of Austria also upset the rankings and progressed to the position no. 1 in Group 6 after success in matches against Sabina SURJAN of Serbia and Ema LOBOSOVA of Slovakia.
Turkey’s Ece HARAC was stretched to full distance today, but she managed to overcame Leila IMRE of Hungary to secure the leading position in Group 7.
Katarzyna WEGRZYN of Poland is also safely through after two wins over Ozge YILMAZ of Turkey and Hana ARAPOVIC of Croatia.
“I am not under pressure. I do not think about the result, just to present myself in best possible way,”said WEGRZYN.
